Guwahati, June 26: A 23-year-old man was rescued from the Brahmaputra River near the Uzanbazar Inland Water Transport (IWT) terminal in Guwahati early Thursday morning by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

According to an NDRF spokesperson from the 1st Battalion, the incident occurred around 3:35 AM. Sentries from Team 1-L stationed at the IWT terminal heard cries for help coming from the river. When they focused their lights in the direction of the sound, they saw a man being swept away by strong currents toward Umananda Island.
Rescuer Lal Ringsan and his team immediately entered the river and pulled the man to safety. He was identified as Hazarat Ali, a resident of Mangaldoi in Darrang district. The NDRF provided on-site pre-hospital care before alerting the Latasil Police Station. Ali was handed over to local authorities for further assistance.

Ali told rescuers he had entered the river to bathe and began to drown. The exact circumstances of how he ended up in the river remain unclear.
