Bottle thrown at CM Sarma’s convoy in Golaghat, BJP slams Congress over ‘frustrated protest’

GUwqahati, June 30: Tension flared in Golaghat on Monday afternoon after a cold drink bottle was thrown at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy, triggering strong condemnation from the BJP and raising questions about protest conduct in the state.

The incident occurred around 1:30 pm near Rajiv Bhawan when a group of Congress workers hurled a Sprite bottle at the Chief Minister’s convoy as he was leaving Golaghat Bezbaruah HS School en route to the District Sports Stadium. While the bottle did not cause any injuries or damage to the CM’s vehicle, it struck the car of Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, who was part of the convoy.

Congress workers were staging a protest at the time, reportedly over cabinet minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, and were seen wearing black badges. The act of aggression quickly drew a sharp response from BJP leaders.

Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia issued a statement condemning the incident, saying, “Throwing a water bottle at the CM’s convoy is not only condemnable but also a reflection of Congress’ frustration.” He added that while peaceful protest is a right in a democracy, such acts cross the line into aggression and endanger public discourse.

“The Congress party has failed to present any credible alternative and has now resorted to dangerous theatrics. This behaviour is harmful to democracy,” Saikia said. “With such a mindset, how can they even dream of forming a government?”

Police personnel were already on duty during the Chief Minister’s visit, and following the incident, additional security measures were put in place. While no official motive has been confirmed, authorities believe the act was politically driven and intended as a show of protest.

No arrests had been made at the time of reporting, but the police are expected to review surveillance footage and take appropriate action.
