‘ECI now part of Sangh Parivar’: Gaurav Gogoi tears into Assam govt over ‘fascist rule’, corporate cronies, and land loot

Guwahati, July 4: Assam Congress president and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, launched a blistering attack on the BJP-led government, the Election Commission of India (ECI), and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during his visit to Bokajan on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, Gogoi accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of abandoning its neutrality. “The ECI was once a constitutional and impartial body. Now, it has become a new member of the Sangh Parivar,” he said.

“They are only concerned with the BJP. The BJP-RSS don’t want a democratic election—they want fascist rule by stripping people of their rights,” he also said.
Gogoi emphasized the need to fortify the Congress party from within before focusing on electoral alliances.

“We have to become a strong partner. Once we’re strong, we can support our allies to victory,” he stated during a party meeting in Bokajan. He cited encouraging public response in Karbi Anglong as a sign that people are turning back to Congress.

“Even small traders are telling me how hard it is to run their business. People who once distanced themselves from us are now coming closer,” Gogoi also said. Gogoi accused the Assam government of being run for the benefit of a select few.

“This government is of mama, mami, Adani, and Ambani. They launch eviction drives wherever they want to land—be it forest, tribal, or government land—and displace poor people mercilessly,” he said, referring to the recent evictions in Lakhimpur.

He took a direct swipe at CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) chief Tuliram Ronghang. “In Dispur, there’s a Himanta Biswa Sarma Pvt Ltd. In Diphu, there’s a Tuliram Ronghang Pvt Ltd. They are holiday partners, using Karbi Anglong like an ATM—for land, coal, timber, and black money,” he alleged.

Gogoi contrasted this with his late father, former CM Tarun Gogoi: “My father was CM for 15 years. He didn’t build tea estates or Italian houses. Today’s leaders are obsessed with personal gain.”

Criticizing BJP’s cultural slogans like Jati, Mati, Bheti, Gogoi said the government has failed to provide peace to farmers and tribal communities. “They talk about protecting identity and land, but they crush the poor. In Karbi Anglong, even local leaders are accumulating wealth at the people’s expense,” he added.

Gogoi also warned of growing lawlessness in Assam. “The crime graph is rising. Elderly people, young girls—no one feels secure. The CM is only concerned about himself.”

He concluded by urging party workers to unite. “If we don’t come together now, our Constitution and democracy will be buried under their fascist rule. Congress will fight to restore fairness and constitutional values in Assam.”
