Skating rink, new indoor stadium to boost sports

CM promotes healthy lifestyles for Tura citizens, opens outdoor gyms

Tura, July 29: Stressing on the importance of good health, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday gave to the people of Tura two outdoor gyms- one at Goanang locality in Araimile, and the other at Nehru Park, as part of a broader initiative to promote healthy lifestyles across the state.

With rising numbers of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and cardiac cases becoming a major health risk for many people, these fitness centres couldn’t have come at a better time.

Speaking at the event, the chief minister was optimistic that the new facilities will significantly benefit Tura’s residents, with three additional open gyms planned for the town, bringing the total to five.

Emphasizing on his government’s commitment to foster wellness for the citizens of the state, Conrad Sangma said, “These open gyms are being established across Meghalaya to provide people with opportunities to lead healthier lives.”

The chief minister also announced the ongoing development of the Tura Botanical Garden in Goanang, which will feature walking pathways, a canopy walk, and a cafeteria. The project, funded at INR 3.8 crore, will provide much needed recreational space for the community.

Tura’s zoological park- Nehru Park, is also getting a major upgrade, with plans to introduce infrastructure and facilities for recreation, learning, and outdoor activities to engage visitors.

On the same day the chief minister paid a visit to Bidanchi Higher Secondary School at Araimile where he laid the foundation stone for additional classrooms that are being supported by Rs 10 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund.

During the foundation ceremony, the chief minister distributed sanction letters worth over Rs 80 lakh to 12 development organizations and educational institutes in Tura to support local initiatives.

Later, the Chief Minister inspected the under-construction Indoor Stadium at Sunny Hills, where he directed the sports department to ensure completion of the project by December 2025 to host indoor events like badminton. The stadium is being developed to support Tura’s role as a co-host for various disciplines at the upcoming 39th National Games. Sangma also announced that in place of a Games village 10-room homestays in Tura would be promoted to accommodate visitors.

With a move to further expand Tura’s recreational infrastructure, the chief minister also laid the foundation for a first of its kind new skating arena at Tetengkol locality that is going to be developed by the renowned Global Himalayan Expedition organization, as part of Conrad Sangma’s government to boost sporting activity and prepare Tura for a prominent role in the National Games.
