HC asks SMB to file report on hawkers

Shillong, Aug 6: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) to file a response on the allegation that some eligible vendors have not been issued the certificates of vending (CoVs).

This comes after the allegations made by the Shillong Roadside Hawkers’ Association, prompting the Special Officer to write to the Chief Executive Officer of the Shillong Municipal Board for a response.

The division bench comprising Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh has passed the order after hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) related to the eviction and relocation of hawkers in the Khyndailad area of Shillong.

The court directed the Shillong Municipal Board to file a response affidavit, which will be circulated to the parties.

“Let copies of the report of the Special Officer be circulated to all

appearing lawyers by tomorrow i.e., 6th August, 2025 . Let copies of the report of the response affidavit to be filed by the Shillong Municipal Board by 11th August, 2025 , be also circulated to the parties,” it stated in the order.

The PIL will be listed again on August 13 for further consideration.
