Govt to continue efforts to solve border dispute: CM

For the first time there is a government that is actually working towards this in a very honest and sincere manner : Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister

Shillong, Aug 26: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said his government is committed to finding solutions to the inter-state border issue for ensuring long lasting peace.

Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, Sangma said there was a lull in the border talks between Meghalaya and Assam for the last 46 years.

“Finally, we (MDA government) started the talks. I guess you can give us that much credit. it is not so simple, it is complicated. So whatever lull that was there for 46 years, we try to make it better and we will continue to work on it,” he stated.

“For the first time there is a government that is actually working towards this in a very honest and sincere manner. It was never there before. Can we find solutions to everything, maybe not. It is not so easy but are we trying? Yes, we are and we will give it our best because we want long-lasting peace,” the CM added.

Referring to the recent incident at Maikhuli in Ri Bhoi district, Sangma said while there have been concerns and incidents, the situation is currently under control.

Sangma emphasized that the border issue is a complex and emotional one, with a history spanning over 52 years, and that finding a lasting solution will require time and effort.

The chief minister noted that there has been an understanding between the administrations of both states and the public at large, which has helped to resolve some of the issues.

“In the meantime we would like to see that the people living in this area can live in a peaceful manner.

There are always be confrontations, but that’s a nature of the problem but I think at large, we are moving in the right direction and let’s see how things unfold in the future,” he stated further.
