Premature to say militants regrouping in B’desh: Conrad

Situation across border not the same as it was last year’

Shillong, Aug 27: Addressing the concerns over militancy in the state, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has stated that while intelligence inputs suggest various activities are underway, it’s premature to conclude that regrouping is happening.

According to Sangma, the situation across the border in Bangladesh has changed significantly over the past year, leading to emerging dynamics that require continuous monitoring.

Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, Sangma said that the government receives multiple intelligence inputs daily, which need to be verified before drawing conclusions.

Some groups that have been active in the past are more akin to dacoits than militant organizations.

“We have to realise and remember that the situation across the border in Bangladesh is not the same as it was last year. So obviously there’s a tendency and I don’t want to go too much details because it’s a matter of national security, so I cannot talk too much in the details, but all I can say, is that different activities and different things across the border are also emerging which are changing the dynamics of the overall situation,” he said.

“Now to say that that hundred percent regrouping is happening, no, we cannot conclude that, but are we getting intel about movements. Everytime we get intel, we try to find out what is happening and then we find out that there were these two, three groups, there were more dacoits then the chapters closed out there. So this kind of activity here and there keeps coming to us. On the basis of this intelligent information, it would be wrong to conclude that there’s a regrouping,” Sangma stated.

Sangma assured that the government is committed to continuously monitoring the situation and taking necessary actions to ensure peace and security in the state.

Referring to the DGP’s statement, Sangma said , “I think the DG was trying to say that we have been getting inputs on the matter and I guess the Press that time just took that first part and did not talk about the whole picture.

So, I’m giving you the whole picture, we get multiple intels everyday. These intels have to be verified, till we don’t verify it, we cannot conclude and say that it is really grouping but is there information coming in, yes information, comes every day.”

“Now the situation has become more critical because of the situation in Bangladesh and therefore we have to continuously monitor it,” he added.
