Assam cop arrested for sexual assault on minor

Shillong, Aug 30: An Assam policeman was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl in a village under Block II in Ri-Bhoi district.

The accused policeman, Projen Langthasa of 18th APBN, Lumding, Assam was caught by the villagers after the incident on August 27, but he managed to run away.

Later, a case was registered at Nongpoh Women Police Station under POCSO Act and accordingly a police team was sent to Lumding on Friday.

He was arrested on Saturday afternoon and brought to Nongpoh in the evening, Ri-Bhoi superintendent of police Vivekananda S Rathore said.

Investigation is in full swing and the chargesheet will be submitted soon, the SP said.

Proceedings will be initiated without any delay to provide compensation as per law to the victim by the state government, he added.

He also thanked all officers concerned of Meghalaya as well as Assam government for prompt assistance in the matter.
