Govt confident of hosting Nat’l Games 2027: Warjri

No final decision on allotment of disciplines among NE states yet

Shillong, Sep 1: The state government is confident of smoothly hosting the National Games in 2027 although infrastructure work is still under way at several places.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, sports minister Shakliar Warjri expressed confidence over smooth conduct of the mega sporting event in Meghalaya.

Acknowledging that “certain areas require further improvement”, the minister said the preparations are an “ongoing process” and that steps have been taken “wherever necessary.”

On the recent decision of jointly sharing the responsibilities among north-eastern states, he said, “The idea is to allocate specific disciplines to each state so that the responsibility of hosting and promoting those events could be shared across the region.”

However, final decision on allotment of disciplines to the states is yet to be made as talks are still under way, he said.

On the state’s preparations, the minister noted that the government has allowed sports associations to utilise funds to reach all districts and organise trials in their respective disciplines.

The minister cited the Meghalaya Games, successfully conducted for two consecutive years, as an example of the state’s broader preparation strategy.

“Several more initiatives, aimed at strengthening disciplines that will feature in the national event, are in the pipeline,” he assured.

Asked if the government would focus on resources on specific sports, Warjri said, “It would not be appropriate to single out any sport,” though he admitted that Meghalaya’s natural physique and strength could give athletes an edge in some areas.

“Identifying and working on these areas…is a lengthy process but one that the government is actively engaged in,” he added.

Looking ahead, Warjri expressed confidence that Meghalaya will deliver a successful edition of the National Games.

“All preparations are in progress and…the state will be ready by the time the National Games arrive in 2027,” he said.

He further remarked that the state’s hospitable culture would play a big role in ensuring a smooth experience for visiting athletes and officials.

“The fact that the Games are scheduled to be held in the state itself…serves as a form of awareness that has already spread among the people,” he noted.
