Steps taken to address infiltration concern: CM

Shillong, Sep 10: The state government is taking proactive measures to address concerns related to illegal immigration, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told the Assembly on Wednesday.

The government has been regularly meeting with various stakeholders, including the Border Security Force (BSF) and Intelligence Bureau (IB), to coordinate efforts to prevent infiltration, he said in reply to a query.

Sangma also informed that the government has increased manpower at checkpoints and ensured community involvement to prevent infiltration.

“The Deputy Commissioners (DCs) in border areas have been instructed to coordinate with villages and provide support to prevent illegal immigration,” he said while adding that the state government and BSF have been actively conducting checks on highways and other areas, resulting in the apprehension of several individuals.

According to him, the government is not simply watching the situation but taking concrete actions to manage the border and prevent unrest.

Sangma assured that discussions on border security and illegal immigration have been taken to the highest level with the Government of India.

While some aspects of security are internal and not shared publicly, the government is committed to ensuring the security of the state’s borders, he said.
