Lapang was widely respected: BJP

Shillong, Sep 13: The state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed condolence over the passing of former Chief Minister Dr Donwa Dethwelson (DD) Lapang late Friday night.

The party described Dr Lapang, affectionately known as ‘Maheh’, as a luminary politician, mass leader, and mentor who dedicated his life to public service.

“His visionary leadership played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s future, including the creation of Ri-Bhoi district. Dr Lapang’s humility, honesty, and determination earned him widespread respect and admiration,” the BJP said in a statement.

“Today, the state of Meghalaya has lost a people’s politician, a genuine mass leader, a mentor, a father figure, and guiding light for generations to come,” BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said in the statement.

He said the party prays for his soul to rest in eternal peace and draws inspiration from his legacy, vision, and ethics to work towards a better Meghalaya.
