NEHU Tura Campus in dire financial distress: Students

Five academic departments of NEHU Tura Campus lack permanent classrooms

Shillong, Sep 22: Students of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura Campus have alleged that the campus had been in dire institutional and financial crisis for three decades and sought intervention of Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar to improve the situation.

The Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) of NEHU Tura Campus submitted a memorandum to the governor highlighting their demands and the crisis of the institution.

According to PGSU, five academic departments of NEHU Tura Campus lack permanent classrooms, forcing students and teachers to use makeshift arrangements.

Basic amenities like clean drinking water, hostel facilities, laboratories, and transport services are scarce, they said.

Alleging that recent budget cuts have brought the campus to the brink of collapse, the PGSU said the move has halted faculty recruitment, promotions, and administrative procedures.

“Students face significant challenges, including limited access to scholarly resources and uncertain futures,” the PGSU said.

Referring to the self-financed Department of Master of Social Work (MSW), the PGSU said the department has been operating without permanent recognition and administrative backing.

“We cannot jeopardise the academic future of thousands of students,” said PGSU vice-president Chakram D Sangma while urging governor to intervene and implement concrete actions to resolve the crisis.

“This is not only an institutional matter but also a humanitarian one. Students are being denied the dignity and rights they deserve as members of a flagship university,” a PGSU delegation said.

Emphasising that without urgent financial support and administrative reform, the campus risks losing its purpose and legacy, the PGSU said, “The crisis has already eroded the confidence of students, parents, and faculty. If left unaddressed, it could permanently damage the future of higher education in the Garo Hills region.”
