Shillong, Sep 24: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of four-year-old Insaphira Lyngdoh Mawnai at Nongrah Nonglum has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the incident.
There is need to uncover the circumstances surrounding Insaphira’s death, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong told reporters on Wednesday.
“I have already instructed the SIT to deeper as to why that unfortunate incident happened and why that boy did not inform immediately about this incident. Why he kept quiet and pretended as if he doesn’t know anything,” he said.
He said he personally felt it there could be anything hidden in the whole episode.
On September 18, the 13-year-old boy, a neighbour and frequent visitor of the victim’s family, was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) after he admitted to taking the girl to a nearby construction site, from where her body was found on September 15.
Insaphira reportedly went missing from her residence at 8 am on September 14.
The SIT headed by SP (City) Herbert Kharkongor had revealed that the boy had taken the girl to the construction site, where he slipped and pulled the girl along, resulting in her accidental drowning.
The post-mortem report confirmed that the cause of death was drowning, with no evidence of physical injury or sexual assault.
The boy confessed to police about taking the girl to the site and attempting to distract attention by concocting a story about a black Scorpio vehicle and masked men.
