7-year-old boy found murdered in Shillong

SIT formed to probe incident ** Culprits to be nabbed soon: Dy CM

Shillong, Oct 9: A seven-year-old child, who went missing from Nongrah here on Wednesday evening, was found murdered inside a forest at Mawpat on Thursday.

The child, Kyrshanbor Kharmudai, was went missing from his house at Lum Myrboh Nongrah around 4 pm on Wednesday, police said.

Confirming the incident a case of homicide, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said, “The post-mortem report will provide a clearer picture of the kind of injury.”

He said preliminary investigation had suggested that the body was placed at the spot of recovery, meaning the murder took place somewhere else.

The heinous crime took place within less than a month of a four-year-old girl found dead in the city. She too belonged to the same area.

A 13-year-old boy was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) for his alleged involvement in the incident.

Syiem said police will investigate all possibilities, including connection between the two cases.

“Right now, I don’t see a connection. It could be an isolated case because the accused of the first case is already been ascertained and identified but nonetheless, we will investigate and find out everything into the matter,” he assured.

As the incident raised concerns among citizens, Syiem emphasized the need for vigilance and precautionary measures, such as installing CCTVs, lighting public areas, and monitoring children.

He also urged locals to report any suspicious activity to the police emergency number 112.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong informed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe into the murder of the seven-year-old boy.

The SIT will be headed by SP East Khasi Hills.

Expressing confidence over the police investigation, Tynsong said, “…very soon we will be able to nab the culprits.”

Asked if these incidents reflect government’s failure, he said, “You cannot just blame the government… we also need to also give proper education to the parents, who need to take care of their kids…”

He asserted that the government is trying its best to ensure safety of the citizens although such criminal activities cannot be attributed as lapse of police.
