Paddy harvest in Lapangap to be over soon: Dy CM

Shillong, Oct 28: Paddy harvest in Lapangap village along Meghalaya-Assam border will complete soon and the situation in the border village is slowly returning to normalcy amid deployment of additional forces, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said on Monday.

“The situation is limping back to normalcy in Lapangap village. Paddy harvesting will likely be completed by tomorrow or within two days. Peace is returning after the meeting held between the peace committee from the Karbi and Pnar communities,” Dhar said.

Regarding the demand for setting up a temporary police camp, Dhar said that a temporary police camp has been set up in Lapangap, with over 30-40 police personnel deployed to maintain peace and calm in the area.

“Police have already been deployed at Lapangap and a temporary camp has also been set up by the SP office. I have also extended help in setting up the camp, which is more or less like a permanent set up,” he said.

Dhar also informed that additional police force is being kept on standby in case of any incident.

“We have also kept additional police forces as standby in case of any incident. We are ready. However, peace and calm are prevailing in the area as people are carrying out their paddy harvesting,” he added.

When asked if Lapangap falls under a disputed area, Dhar said that it was never considered a disputed area before, but recent incidents have raised the issue.

“Before it was never under a disputed area. However, due to recent incidents, this issue has come up. So, we have to wait for the two regional committees to resolve the issue. Lapangap, Khanduli-Psiar is very much within Meghalaya. However, since there is a dispute, we are keeping a watch,” he said.

Dhar emphasized that this is the first time an incident has taken place in Lapangap village, and the matter will be resolved by the two state governments through their respective regional committees.

“This matter will be resolved by the two state governments through the respective regional committees. We are discussing this with Assam too so that there is a need to resolve the issue,” he added.
