Govt drops PPP plan, to explore new model for Tura Medical College operations

Shillong, Oct 29: The Meghalaya government has shelved its plan to run the upcoming Tura Medical College under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model following opposition from several organisations.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday said the government will now study alternative options to make the college functional while keeping public concerns in mind.

“We will study different options on how we can make the college operational,” Sangma said, adding that the PPP proposal was initially mooted due to the shortage of medical professionals in the state.

“Since various organisations opposed the idea, we decided to take their views and suggestions. We shall further engage with stakeholders and the public to find the best way forward,” the Chief Minister stated.

Sangma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to make Tura Medical College a premier institute of excellence and said efforts are underway to resolve all operational challenges at the earliest.
