Tura, Nov 20: Two labourers were killed and three others left critically injured after a mud wall they were working on suddenly caved in at Bokmagre, near Nehru Park in Tura, on Thursday morning.
Rescue teams from the state and district disaster and rescue agency (SDMA/DDMA) and police managed to pull out alive three of the labourers, but two other workers lost their lives in the mishap that occurred when they were digging the earth perched atop a concrete wall.
West Garo Hills Superintendent of police Abraham T Sangma told The Meghalayan Express that they were alerted shortly after the incident took place and rescue teams were dispatched to the site.
“Two bodies were retrieved from the site and three injured have been admitted to Tura civil hospital. Doctors are monitoring their condition,” said the SP.
The labourers hailed from neighboring Assam and had been engaged in the construction work for quite some time. This is the second instance of mud collapse involving construction work in the region. Several months earlier, a similar calamity occurred in the Phulbari-Rajabala region where one person was buried alive due to excessive soil extraction for construction of a house.
