Shillong, Nov 20: The state government has planned to dismantle the old assembly building at Khyndailad as part of beautification of the heart of the capital city.
“The old Assembly will be dismantled as per plan, which is however yet to be finalised,” Deputy Chief Minister in‑charge of Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar said on Thursday.
According to the plan, pedestrian‑friendly walkways, footpaths, flower pots, and upgraded tiling will be installed in the area.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being finalised and tender will be floated subsequently, Dhar said.
He, however, made it clear that beautification of Khyndailad area will be taken up in full after relocation of the state Assembly to its new site at Mawdiangdiang in New Shillong Township.
“As soon as we shift it to the new location, we will go for the full beautification of that area,” he said.
Meanwhile, he admitted concerns of local residents about any possible closure of the road causing problems for them.
“Timing (for use of the road) will be fixed after both government and residents agree,” the minister said.
The government plans to change the tiles and keep flower pots all along the road.
On the MTC shopping mall, he said work progress is around 85‑88% it is likely to be completed next year.
