Headmaster accused of missing school for 10 years in Garo Hills

Tura, Dec 9: A school headmaster in the remote region of South Garo Hills has been accused by villagers of failing to attend to his duties for ten long years leading to demands for stern action against him from the government.

A meeting reportedly held with members of the managing committee and the villagers of Mon Rongsna Government Lower Primary School in South Garo Hills with social activist and former student leader Greneth M Sangma culminated in a decision to approach the state government to seek action against the headmaster, who stands accused of being absent from 2015 till date. The headmaster in question has been further accused of drawing his monthly salary from the government all through the years of his absence.

“Multiple complaints were filed by the managing committee with the Education Department for several years but no action was taken,” pointed out activist Greneth M Sangma. The villagers allege that as many as twenty students from the said school have already dropped out for lack of regular classes.

The officials of the Education department have also been accused of negligence and turning a blind eye to the complaints from the villagers. A sub-Inspector of Schools and a CRC Secretary directed to conduct a spot inspection and submit their findings have both been accused of failing to visit the school and the village.

“The Sub-Divisional School Education Officer had ordered for a spot enquiry from the SI who in turn claimed the CRC Secretary would be visiting the site and a report would be submitted this week. But villagers have clarified that neither of the two came for the inspection,” says Greneth Sangma.

They are demanding the termination of the services of the headmaster, appointment of a new qualified teacher and strong action against the Sub-Inspector of  Schools for dereliction of his duties.
