Shillong, Dec 9: The National Highway Demand Committee South West Khasi Hills District (NHDCSWKHD) has appealed to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong to restore the original double-lane plan for the Mawngap-Ranikor (NH 44E) Road Project.
In a letter to Tynsong on Tuesday, Committee Chairman Kynpham V Kharlyngdoh expressed disappointment and concern over reports suggesting a downgrade of the project from a double-lane highway to an intermediate lane.
“We are deeply concerned that such a decision, if finalized, will severely undermine the long-term developmental prospects of our region,” Kharlyngdoh stated.
The committee highlighted the strategic importance of the road, which connects approximately 1,000 villages across three districts, including East Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, and West Khasi Hills. The road is a vital economic corridor, facilitating the movement of agricultural goods, access to healthcare and education, and regional mobility.
“We urge transparency and neutrality in such public infrastructure decisions. We are not against any initiative by the state government for better road connection, but we are firm in our demand that the National Highway is needed at the earliest,” the committee stated.
The committee has requested the deputy chief minister to restore the original double-lane plan, ensure cooperation between the state government, NHIDCL, and the Centre, and protect the project from any actions that may dilute its original intent.
