Muster roll workers defer stir ahead of meet with CM

Shillong, Dec 15: The Joint Action Committee Muster Roll Workers Union (JACMRWU) has postponed its protest – supposed to be launched on December 16 – ahead of its meeting with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

Representatives of the Union are scheduled to meet the Chief Minister either on December 17 or early January 2026.

“We will wait for the Chief Minister’s call and continue to follow up on our demands,” said Bympherlang Pyndem, general secretary of the Union.

The Union had been pushing for its demands for implementation of Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA), Floor Rate, and retirement age benefits for muster roll workers.

It had staged protest on November 22 and met the Labour Commissioner on December 3 to discuss their demands.

“The Commissioner clarified that the GST reform has reduced the cost of essential commodities, hence they cannot enhance the VDA. We have asked for written substantiation, but he failed to provide it,” Pyndem stated.

The union has also urged the Chief Minister to direct Animal Husbandry department to release pending salary of Muster Roll workers, which has been pending for six months.
