Christmas spirit shines at Tura Market

CM Conrad K Sangma’s festive visit marked by heartfelt gestures

Tura, Dec 23: The festive hum of Tura supermarket, flooded with thousands of visitors out doing last minute shopping, turned into a scene of warmth and humanity this afternoon when Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma paid a surprise visit to greet traders and the public. What began as a routine greeting quickly transformed into a series of heartfelt gestures that captured the true spirit of the season.

Walking up the stairs of this multi-storeyed shopping complex that was crowded to the brim, the Chief Minister stopped to meet several specially-abled individuals who often stand on the sidelines performing music to earn their livelihoods. Their requests were modest, but his responses spoke volumes. One young man asked for a pair of shoes. Without hesitation, the Chief Minister accompanied him to a shop and purchased them himself, drawing applause from onlookers.

Moments later, a woman approached with a plea for a sweater for her daughter and shoes for herself. The Chief Minister arranged for both, leaving her visibly moved. Those who witnessed the exchange described the atmosphere as “electric yet tender,” with shoppers pausing to watch the exchanges unfold.

For many in the market, the gestures were more than gifts—they were reminders of empathy in leadership. “It wasn’t about politics today,” said one vendor. “It was about humanity. He made people feel seen.”

With smiles, handshakes, and simple gifts, the chief minister left behind more than greetings- he showed that small acts of kindness can make the biggest difference.
