Meghalaya mine blast: 8 suffer second-degree burns, under hospital care

Shillong, Feb 5: Eight people have been admitted to two hospitals in Shillong,  following a dynamite explosion at an illegal coal mine in East Jaintia Hills district on February 5.

The injured individuals, who have suffered second-degree burn injuries, are Shanki Shylla, Deb Malakar, Korna, Bom Magar, Lalit Magar, Jamil Ahmed, and Nor Bahadur, with seven of them being treated at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) and one at Nazareth Hospital, Shillong, officials informed on Friday.

The explosion has resulted in 18 deaths, with rescue operations underway.

Response teams, including 3 NDRF teams, 2 SDRF teams, and 1 SRT team, have been mobilized, along with additional medical teams and ambulances.

“Search & rescue operations started at 9:55 am on February 6. Response Teams mobilized for search & rescue operations include 3 teams of NDRF, 2 teams of SDRF and 1 team of SRT. Additional medical teams from Jowai and Shillong, 7 ambulances from Jowai. From BSF, 1 Deputy Commandant and 15 personnel, 2 ambulances with nursing staff and 2 doctors have been deployed,” officials informed.
