Tura, March 9: The district administration has imposed a 24-hour curfew across West Garo Hills from 12:00 a.m. on March 10 to 12:00 a.m. on March 11, 2026, citing concerns over the prevailing law and order situation and opposition to the participation of non-tribals in the upcoming General Election of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, 2026.
The curfew order was issued by the District Magistrate of West Garo Hills, Vibhor Aggarwal, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS). The administration said there is a possibility of obstruction or intimidation affecting the movement of vehicles and disruption of normal life in the district.
The order prohibits obstruction to the movement of vehicles, carrying or concealing weapons such as sticks, stones, firearms or other lethal weapons, and any attempt to obstruct the lawful functioning of shops, establishments or offices. It also bans unlawful assembly of five or more persons aimed at causing such obstruction.
Authorities warned that any violation of the order will attract penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other relevant provisions.
The order, issued ex-parte due to the emergent nature of the situation, will remain in force across the entire district until further orders.
