UP man dies after ambulance ‘denied fuel’, probe ordered

Ballia (UP), Apr 24: A 50-year-old man allegedly could not be taken to hospital in time after a private ambulance ran out of fuel and was denied petrol at a filling station in Bairia area of the district, an official said on Friday.

A probe has been ordered into the incident that took place on Wednesday night.

District Supply Officer (DSO) Devmani Mishra said the incident came to light on Thursday.

Chhatthu Sharma (50), a resident of Pandeypur village in Bairia tehsil, fell seriously ill on Wednesday night.

His family was taking him to the district hospital in a private ambulance when the vehicle stopped on the way due to lack of fuel. The family then approached a petrol pump near Tengrahi village for fuel, but the operator allegedly refused, citing unavailability.

The family has alleged that Sharma could not be taken to the hospital in time due to non-availability of petrol and died on the way.

Mishra termed the matter “very serious” and said the petrol pump operator should have provided fuel to the ambulance.

A probe committee comprising the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Bairia, the DSO and the Assistant Food Officer has been constituted and has begun an inquiry, the officer said.

Appropriate action will be taken after the probe report is submitted to the competent authority, he added. (PTI)
