Congress to name candidate for Gambegre seat soon

Shillong, Aug 17: Congress will announce its official candidate for the upcoming Gambegre bye-election soon, informed party chief Vincent H Pala, on Friday.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting held on Friday, Pala said since the election has to be held within six months from the date of resigning, he is hopeful the Election Commission will announce the date for Gambegre election for September or October.

According to Pala, applications have been received but the names will only be revealed after the committee submits it to Delhi and declared by them.

Pala further informed that the party has unanimously agreed to the name proposed by Tura MP Saleng A Sangma. “We are quite confident that we will win the Gambegre seat …. we are doing well and we are united,” he said.

Accusing the NPP of violating the law of the land, Pala said, “I am told that the NPP and the ministers give instant cheque on the people on the ground so it is totally against the law of the land. It is totally trying to purchase due to desperate in winning the elections because they lost in Garo Hills election, so they are trying to regain that one, that’s why the way they are trying to get our MLAs is just to show the faces of the MLAs Congress, so the MLAs who have gone with them. For the NPP it will be a good story or sucess but for the MLAs it will be a disgrace.”

According to Pala, Congress has geared up its preparation and is confident to retain Gambegre seat.
