Inter-school chess tourney in Garo Hills comes to an end

Ampati, August 17: The two-day Inter-School Chess Tournament 2024 at Ampati Degree College ended on Saturday with 44 chess players from South West Garo Hills and Tura schools participating at the tourney.

The tournament features three categories – under 10 years, under 12 years, and under 16 years- aiming to cultivate a strong chess culture and nurture young talent in the region.

In the open category, Amaziah Gapesa Ch. Marak from Casarina Public School, Tura, emerged as the champion with a remarkable 6 points. Chongkimbea M Sangma of St. Claret Higher Secondary School, Ampati, secured the top position in the under 16 category with 5.5 points, followed by Yunkeycheah Ch. Marak of Boldamgre School and Jakgitelat Ch. Momin of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Tura, in the second and third positions, respectively. 

In the under 12 category, Baiyangsrang Sangma of Casarina Public School, Tura, claimed the first position with 6 points. Adora K Marak of Sherwood School, Tura, and Abrin M Sangma of St. Mary’s School, Ghatgre, secured the second and third positions, respectively. 

The under 10 category saw Aesara Ringmitelachi Ch. Momin of Soter School, Tura, secured the first position with 5 points. Takimra Sangma of Casarina Public School, Tura, and Ansame Marak of Sun Town English School took the second and third positions, respectively. 

SDSEO Emphul Marak graced the event on the first day, while MDC of Boldamgre, Stevie Marak, attended the final day and distributed prizes to the winners.

The tournament, organised in collaboration with the District Administration of South West Garo Hills, showcased exceptional talents and competitive spirit of young chess players in the region.
