Body of missing farmer retrieved from Ri Bhoi landslide

Nongpoh, July 24: The body of a man who was buried under a landslide in Ri Bhoi district was recovered following a joint rescue operation on Thursday.

The police, Fire and Emergency Service personnel, village authorities and local residents worked together to dig him out after the disaster struck his farmhouse in Umdap Rngi on July 20 after continuous heavy rainfall.

The deceased, a resident of Byrnihat, had reportedly been living in the forested area of Umdap Rngi for several years, where he was engaged in farming.

His brother went to the farmhouse after his sibling failed to return home and found that the hut had been completely buried under the landslide. He immediately informed the village authorities and Byrnihat Police.

Following the alert, personnel from the Byrnihat Police, the Fire and Emergency Service, and residents of Umdap Rngi and Umdap Dumu launched a coordinated rescue operation. An excavator was deployed to clear the debris, and after nearly four hours of intensive efforts, the victim’s body was recovered at around 4 pm on Thursday.

Police have taken up the necessary legal formalities, while further investigation into the incident is underway.
