5 killed, 3 injured after loess collapse buries house in China

Beijing, Jul 25: Five people were killed and three others injured after a large amount of loess collapsed onto a village in north China’s Shanxi province, burying a house, authorities said on Saturday.

Loess is a wind-deposited sediment composed mainly of silt, along with clay, sand and calcium carbonate.

The incident occurred on Friday evening in Haoyi village in Dicun township of Hongtong County in Linfen city, located on the Loess Plateau.

The house was buried after the loess collapsed, killing five people and injuring three others, county-level emergency response authorities said.

Rescue teams comprising local police, firefighters and medical personnel pulled out all eight people trapped under the debris, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Five of them were found without vital signs, while the three injured were hospitalised and are in stable condition, the report said. (PTI)
