New Delhi, Aug 17: The CBI on Monday filed a chargesheet against lawyer Samarth Singh and ex-district judge Giribala, the husband and mother-in-law of late actor-model Twisha Sharma, accusing them of inflicting mental cruelty on her and leaving her with no option but to end life, officials said.
Twisha (33) was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her marital home in Bhopal on May 12, just five months after her marriage to Samarth.
In the nearly 1,000-page chargesheet, filed before the special court of Judge Shobhana Bhalavi in Bhopal, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) levelled charges of abetment to suicide on Girilbala and her son Samarth, while keeping the probe into claims of dowry demands and alleged dowry death open.
The central agency, which probed the high-profile case, alleged that both Samarth and his mother Girilbala, currently lodged in Bhopal jail under judicial custody, inflicted mental cruelty on Twisha, leaving her no option but to take her own life, the officials said.
The CBI has given factual details about the cruelty inflicted on Twisha and who did what to her, including the mental harassment she was subjected to. All of that made it clear that she was left with no option, Twisha’s bother Ashish Sharma told reporters.
Twisha’s family had accused Samarth and Giribala of mental abuse, physical violence, and dowry-related torture.
According to Twisha’s family lawyer, Ankur Pandey, the CBI has sought permission from the court for further investigation into the case.
The CBI has completed the investigation and filed the chargesheet within the stipulated 90-day period. It has requested the court to allow further investigation into two or three aspects, subject to the judge’s permission, Pandey told PTI Videos.
He informed that charges relating to dowry death under different sections of the BNS along with other counts of the Dowry Prohibition Act have been invoked against the mother-son duo.
Pandey said the CBI submitted sufficient evidence along with the chargesheet and sought permission from the court for further investigation into the roles of some other individuals whose involvement has emerged during the probe.
More charges, including tampering with evidence, may be added going forward and the number of accused may also increase as the probe progresses, said Anurag Shrivastava, another lawyer for the deceased’s family.
Twisha’s father Navnidhi Sharma told PTI that the charges in the ‘challan’ (chargesheet) were almost the same as in the First Information Report (FIR).
Results of some FSL (forensic science laboratory) reports are awaited, he added.
The former actor Twisha, who married Samarth on December 9, 2025, was found hanging at her marital home on May 12. It was alleged in the FIR that Samarth had taken her to AIIMS Bhopal, where he claimed that she hanged herself at home at 10.20 pm.
The doctors at AIIMS informed the police that she was brought dead to the hospital, after which a medico-legal case was registered, the FIR said.
After the initial police investigation and a second autopsy ordered by the Madhya Pradesh High Court to clear critical doubts and address the family’s allegations of lapses in the first performed by AIIMS Bhopal, the CBI took over the probe and arrested Samarth and Giribala.
The second autopsy was conducted on May 24 by a four-member team from AIIMS Delhi in Bhopal.
In their statements, Twisha’s family has alleged that she was tormented by her in-laws, who were not satisfied with the dowry paid at the time of the wedding.
They levelled allegations of mental torture and domestic violence, which allegedly pushed the former model and actor to take the extreme step.
Giribala has moved a bail application before the High Court. (PTI)
