Karachi, Sep 4: Pakistani security forces have killed 12 militants belonging to Baloch insurgent groups in the Kalat district of the troubled Balochistan province, the army said on Friday.
Police and paramilitary forces also foiled an attempt by dozens of armed militants to take control of Bhag city in the province on Friday, in which five people were injured, the Inter-Services Public Relations, the media wing of the military, said in a statement.
It said that security forces conducted intelligence-based operations on Wednesday in which 12 Baloch militants were killed.
“During the conduct of the operation, the terrorists’ hideout was identified, monitored and busted through prompt surgical action and 12 terrorists were killed,” it said.
A cache of ammunition and improvised explosive devices was destroyed on-site, it added.
It said that a relentless counter-terrorism campaign under ‘Azm-i-Istehkam’ by security forces and law enforcement agencies would “continue at full pace to wipe out the menace of foreign-sponsored and supported terrorism from the country”.
Meanwhile, two policemen were among five people injured after militants attacked a police station, the assistant commissioner’s office and a bank in Balochistan’s Bhag city on Friday.
Shahid Rind, a spokesperson for the Balochistan government, said that about 40 militants attacked the three places using “heavy weapons, rocket launchers, machine guns, sniper rifles and hand grenades”.
Rind said the militants failed to take control of the Bhag police station or seize weapons from the facility as the security forces engaged the attackers in a gun battle for nearly two hours and forced them to retreat. (PTI)
