With the delimitation altering the geographical boundaries of the Council constituencies, the leadership has decided to start afresh
Shillong, Oct 8: The ruling National People’s Party has cancelled its entire panel of 29 candidates announced earlier this year for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections (GHADC) elections following the delimitation of the council constituencies.
State President Prestone Tynsong had formally de-notified the two lists issued on February 16 and March 4, acting on a proposal moved by the party’s working president in-charge of Garo Hills Marcuise N. Marak.
In his order, Tynsong said, “The notification… stands denotified with immediate effect. This is necessary in view of the delimitation of the 29 constituencies of GHADC.”
The move was triggered by a high-level meeting held in August at the residence of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
According to Marak’s letter dated October 6, the meeting was chaired by the Chief Minister himself in the presence of Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma and senior party leaders.
“It was decided that, in view of the subsequent delimitation of the GHADC constituencies, the names of the candidates earlier selected and notified by the Party would be cancelled and fresh names would be considered in accordance with the revised constituencies,” Marak stated in his communication seeking de-notification.
The earlier lists had covered all 29 seats, including heavyweights from Siju, Tura, Betasing and Williamnagar. The party had declared 24 names in the first list and five more in the second list.
With the delimitation altering the geographical boundaries of the Council constituencies, the leadership has decided to start afresh.
Marak has assured that fresh names will be submitted for the state president’s approval soon.
