Aamir Khan Quits Smoking: Reflecting on How Cigarette Smoke Affected Ex-Wife Kiran Rao

Mumbai, Jan 11: Aamir Khan revealed on Friday, during the trailer launch of his son Junaid Khan’s upcoming romantic comedy Loveyapa, that he has quit smoking. While Aamir described the decision as a gesture of sacrifice as a father, supporting his son’s debut in the Hindi film industry, he admitted he’d been considering giving up smoking for some time.

When Aamir Spoke About the Impact of His Smoking on Kiran Rao

In a 2018 interview with Mid-Day, Aamir had discussed how cigarette smoke affected his then-wife Kiran Rao. “I quit smoking for two-three years when I was training for Dhoom 3. But then, I picked it up again. I tend to smoke more when my movies release. Kiran would feel the effects of the cigarette smoke, but she wasn’t averse to the pipe. I even experimented with cigars but didn’t enjoy the experience,” he had shared.

Aamir has openly confessed to his long-standing struggle with smoking, describing it as a habit he “enjoys.” However, during the making of the 2013 action blockbuster Dhoom 3, directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, Aamir temporarily gave up smoking. The film, produced by Yash Raj Films, saw Aamir in a physically demanding double role alongside Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, and Jackie Shroff.

Switching From Cigarettes to the Pipe

In the same interview, Aamir recalled his transition to smoking a pipe. “A friend of mine suggested that if I really wanted to smoke, I should try a pipe. I liked it so much that I couldn’t go back to cigarettes. I tried one again recently, but the taste was unbearable,” he said.

Aamir was even spotted smoking a pipe during an Instagram Live session while promoting Laapataa Ladies, a film directed by his ex-wife Kiran Rao.

Aamir and Kiran: A Creative and Personal Partnership

Aamir and Kiran were married for 16 years, a journey that began on the sets of Ashutosh Gowariker’s 2001 classic Lagaan, where Kiran worked as an Assistant Director. The couple married in 2005 and announced their separation in 2021. They share a son, Azad.

What’s Next for Aamir Khan

On the professional front, Aamir is gearing up for his next project, Sitaare Zameen Par, while his son Junaid Khan prepares for his Bollywood debut with Loveyapa.
