Shillong, Aug 20: Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) has sought early justice in the case of syringe attack on a 16-year-old schoolgirl at Jaiaw, Shillong.
MSCPCR chairperson Agatha Sangma, who visited the girl on Tuesday, termed the incident as “shocking” and stressed the need for collective efforts to ensure safety of children.
“We want to have a state where children are safe, and being able to go to school safely is a right of every child,” Sangma said.
During her meeting with the girl, Sangma praised her presence of mind in seeking medical attention promptly after the incident.
Two masked miscreants injected the girl, who was on the way to school, with a suspected drug before fleeing the scene on Monday.
The MSCPCR chairperson, meanwhile, underlined the need for functional CCTVs and better surveillance in the state.
“We have to create much better surveillance in our state, also we should have better security system,” she stated.
Although CCTVs are installed in the area, Sangma said the footage is currently unavailable, and the girl couldn’t identify the attackers due to their masks and helmets.
Informing that police are investigating the matter, she expressed confidence that the culprits will soon be arrested.
She also appealed to children not to be discouraged by this incident and to continue attending school without fear.
She emphasized that while this incident has raised concern, children in Meghalaya generally feel safe while going to school.
Sangma also called for joint efforts by the government and the society to create awareness and make the community more sensitive towards children’s safety.
