Ampati citizens rally for cleanliness and drug-free future

Tura, Aug 23: Citizens of Ampati, including students from schools and colleges, came together to support cleanliness, tree plantation and a drug-free lifestyle while participating in a Special Awareness Programme on Swachhata Hi Seva, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan that was organized by the Field Publicity Office, Tura, Central Bureau of Communication, under the Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, at Ampati Degree College in South West Garo Hills on Friday.

During the programme, Dr. Matgrik Sangma, Medical Officer, Ampati, highlighted the pressing issue of drug abuse in the district, which shares borders with Bangladesh and Assam, making it vulnerable to illegal drug trafficking. He noted that youth and adolescents are particularly susceptible to substance abuse, impacting their mental and physical health. To combat this, the State government offers support through the District Mental Health Programme, with helplines available at 9362749485 and Tele-MANAS at 14410, accessible in English, Khasi, Pnar, Garo, and Hindi.

The programme featured engaging talks by Vice-Principal Laritha R. Marak and lecturers Thinku G. Sangma and Chunki Koch, who emphasized the dangers of tobacco, the importance of tree plantation, and the value of sanitation. The day was packed with activities, including pledges for Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, a cleanliness drive, and the planting of litchi and pomelo saplings. A quiz competition added excitement, with prizes awarded to winners, capping off a day of meaningful community action.
