
Guwahati, May 22: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held high-level meetings in New Delhi on Thursday, outlining his government’s ambitious economic and educational roadmaps. In separate meetings with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the Chief Minister presented plans to catapult Assam into the ranks of India’s fastest-growing and knowledge-driven states.

₹10 lakh crore GSDP goal by 2027–28
Meeting with Finance Minister Sitharaman at North Block, Sarma detailed Assam’s goal of building a ₹10 lakh crore Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) by FY 2027–28. He highlighted Assam’s strong growth momentum, driven by resource mobilization and revenue-generating reforms, which have positioned the state among the top performers in economic growth nationally.
Finance Minister Sitharaman lauded Assam’s development trajectory and assured full support from the Centre in achieving its growth targets.
Following the meeting, Sarma wrote on social media platform X: “It was a privilege to call upon Hon’ble Finance Minister Smt @nsitharaman Ji today in New Delhi.
We had a good discussion on Assam’s growth trajectory, how it has emerged among the country’s fastest growing States and on our plans to build a ₹10 lakh cr GSDP by 2027-2028.”
Senior officials from both the Ministry of Finance and the Assam government were part of the meeting.

Push to operationalise IIM Guwahati
Later that evening, Sarma called on Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to discuss the early operationalisation of the upcoming IIM campus in Guwahati. The Chief Minister urged swift action to establish the institution as a fully functional academic hub alongside IIT and AIIMS, making Guwahati one of the few cities in India to host all three premier institutes.
Minister Pradhan assured the CM that the IIM Guwahati campus will be operationalised at the earliest, acknowledging Sarma’s proactive push to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Pradhan posted on X: “Delightful meeting with CM Assam, @himantabiswa in Delhi today evening.

We had productive conversations on transforming the learning, research, innovation and entrepreneurship landscape of Assam… The double-engine BJP govt. Under the visionary leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi ji is committed to support Assam and establish the northeast as a knowledge-driven society.”
Sarma echoed the sentiment, stating: “Guwahati will soon be one of the few cities in India that is home to IIT, AIIMS and now IIM.”
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Principal Secretary Dr. K.K. Dwivedi and Resident Commissioner Kavitha Padmanabhan during both meetings.
