Guwahati, May 20: In a move to expand Assam’s industrial footprint, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the site of the long-defunct Assam Co-operative Sugar Mill at Barua Bamungaon in Golaghat district on Tuesday. The inspection aligns with the state government’s broader effort to repurpose idle government land for industrial development and attract private investment post-Advantage Assam 2.0.

Established in 1958, the Assam Co-operative Sugar Mills Limited was the state’s first sugar mill but has remained non-operational since 1991. Now, approximately 500 bighas of unused land are being considered for transformation into a new industrial park.

Sarma highlighted that, following the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, several industrial groups have expressed interest in setting up operations in the state. “Many have already approached the government for land. We’ve approved two projects in Numaligarh, and land has been allocated,” he said.

The Chief Minister underscored the state’s commitment to proactively providing infrastructure support and land to industrial investors. He confirmed that steps are underway to resolve legal and administrative issues surrounding the sugar mill property, after which the land would be repurposed for industrial use.

To safeguard the site from encroachment, the government plans to construct a boundary wall around the property. District Commissioners across Assam have also been instructed to secure vacant government lands and prepare them for potential industrial deployment.

Sarma was joined during the site visit by MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MLAs Mrinal Saikia and Biswajit Phukan, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, Golaghat District Commissioner Pulak Mahanta, and other senior officials.

The visit signals a strategic push to convert idle assets into economic engines, strengthening Assam’s industrial base and making it a more competitive destination for investment.
