Assam Congress to pay Tribute to Zubeen Garg’s on Birthday with ‘Kanchanjungha’, massive arrangements underway in Guwahati

Guwahati, Nov 18: Assam is set to unite in a grand cultural homage on November 18 to commemorate the 53rd birth anniversary of the late legendary singer, composer, and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, the first since his sudden passing in September.

This commemorative event titled “Kanchanjungha – Sanskriti Houk Maitreyir Mantra” has been organized by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), reflecting both Assam’s deep resonance with Zubeen’s legacy and the party’s pivotal role in advocating justice for him.

The tribute is much more than music. It stands as a symbol of Assam’s collective grief, pride, and demand for accountability. Zubeen Garg’s artistic genius transformed Assamese music and public activism, and his absence has left a void felt across all walks of life.

The APCC, under the leadership of president Gaurav Gogoi, has been front and center in organizing efforts that unite artists, writers, students, and citizens in both mourning and mobilization.

Speaking about the event, Gaurav Gogoi said, “This 18th of November will be the first birth anniversary of our beloved Zubeen Garg since his passing. We are organising this central tribute, ‘Kanchanjungha – Culture as the mantra of friendship’, not only to celebrate his art but also to honour his lifelong commitment to Assam’s cultural identity. Zubeen Garg stood for justice, creativity, and the pride of Assam—values the Congress continues to uphold.”

In the months following Zubeen’s death in Singapore, the Assam Congress has been demanding a transparent and thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to his demise. The party’s concerted campaign has included peace marches, justice rallies, digital campaigns, media engagements, and sustained public advocacy across the state- mobilizing widespread support for the movement  “Justice for Zubeen Garg”.

The musical programme itself captures the spirit of regional unity and love for art, featuring performances by eminent artists like Joi Baruah, Manas Robin, Maitreyee Patar, Rupam Bhuyan, Sweety Das, Richa Bhardwaj, Trishna Devi among others. The event will also host writers, filmmakers, and many close friends and family of  Zubeen Garg- bringing together Assam’s cultural community.

In line with Zubeen’s lifelong environmental advocacy, especially his love for the Nahor tree, Congress has announced a state-wide Nahor plantation drive, pledging to plant a sapling in every booth blending cultural homage with progressive action.

“As a mark of respect for the artist’s deep love for nature, especially his special fondness for the Nahor tree, the committee has planned a statewide initiative to plant Nahor saplings in every booth across Assam.” Gogoi further remarked.

Born on November 18, 1972, Zubeen Garg redefined Assamese music and public activism. His sudden absence has left a profound void. Assam Congress through sustained advocacy, mass mobilization, and cultural assertion seeks to demonstrate its enduring commitment to cultural justice, unity, and the safeguarding of Assam’s unique identity—a legacy Zubeen represented.
