Guwahati, April 24: In a strong show of solidarity, the Assam government has announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the 26 Indian and Nepali nationals who lost their lives in the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press conference in Guwahati on Thursday. He emphasized that the gesture is a tribute to the innocent lives lost and a firm stand against terrorism.

“We deeply mourn the loss of lives in the Pahalgam attack. As a mark of respect and support, Assam will provide an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh to each victim’s family,” Sarma said. “Massacres and violence once darkened Assam’s history. Today, we stand firmly with the families affected by this brutality,” he said.

Condemning the attack, which has been widely attributed to Pakistan-sponsored terrorists, the Chief Minister extended full support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong stance against terrorism. “We echo the Prime Minister’s resolve to wipe out terrorism. The people of Assam stand with him, united in our support for decisive action against Pakistan,” he said.

Sarma also aimed what he called “divisive elements” attempting to deflect blame from Pakistan. He singled out AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam, whose recent comment suggesting the attack was a conspiracy by the BJP sparked widespread outrage.

“We are saddened by Aminul Islam’s shocking attempt to indirectly support Pakistan. Such statements are not just irresponsible—they are dangerous. He has been arrested on sedition charges and will be produced in court,” Sarma stated.

Issuing a stern warning, the Chief Minister said Assam would take the toughest possible measures against anyone attempting to justify or support terrorism. “Let it be known: anyone defending Pakistan, either through public statements or social media posts, will face legal action. I have already directed Assam Police to act swiftly against such individuals,” he added.

The Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists, has triggered nationwide anger and grief. Assam’s proactive response not only underscores its commitment to national security but also its compassion for the victims and their families.
