Guwahati Oct 4: Assam Pradesh BJP president Bhavesh Kalita on Friday criticized the Congress party for making premature claims regarding the 2026 state elections using the metaphor of “dividing curd before the cow gives birth to its calf” to illustrate that the Congress was making promises before achieving anything substantial.
Kalita was responding to a journalist’s question about Gaurav Gogoi potentially becoming Assam’s chief minister in 2026.
Kalita also took a jab at Gaurav Gogoi’s influence, particularly in the context of upcoming by-elections for five constituencies—Sidli, Dholai, Bihali, Samaguri, and Bongaigaon.
“Gogoi would not have an impact in most of these areas. Gogoi will be defeated in his own constituency of Jorhat in future elections,” Kalita said.
Further criticizing the Congress, Kalita referred to past remarks made by Congress leaders, specifically citing Mallikarjun Kharge’s comments regarding the Bharat Ratna award to Bhupen Hazarika. He also mentioned a recent statement by a Congress minister from Karnataka, suggesting that Assam did not need a semiconductor project, as evidence that the party does not prioritize Assam’s development.
Kalita accused Congress of wanting Assam’s youth to seek employment outside the state rather than fostering local opportunities for growth and prosperity.
The BJP leader announced that the party had successfully enrolled nearly 60 lakh members during the first phase of its membership drive. He highlighted the momentum gained in this initial phase and stated that preparations for the second phase were now underway.
“Today, we have formed a three-member committee, led by former MP Topon Kumar Gogoi, to oversee and monitor the ongoing membership drive,” Kalita said, emphasizing the party’s commitment to expanding its base and strengthening its presence across Assam.
The membership drive is part of the BJP’s larger strategy to consolidate support ahead of future elections in the state.
Kalita extended his congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the inclusion of Assamese as a classical language, alongside five other languages of India. Kalita remarked that this recognition would significantly contribute to the preservation of the identity, language, and culture of the Assamese people.
Expressing his gratitude, Kalita said, “I am glad that PM Modi understands the needs and aspirations of the people of Assam.” He emphasized that this move was an important step in safeguarding Assamese heritage for future generations and highlighted the central government’s commitment to Assam’s cultural legacy.
Kalita also expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Sarma for the creation of 30 new co-districts across the state and the inclusion of eight new departments within their jurisdiction. Kalita appreciated the initiative, stating, “It is the Chief Minister’s policy for transformation, reformation, and performance of the state government for the welfare of the people.” He highlighted that this move would improve administrative efficiency and ensure better governance, ultimately benefiting the citizens of Assam.
