Guwahati, May 30: In a key development ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, the BJP and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have decided to contest one seat each out of the two vacant seats from Assam. The decision was finalized on Friday during a joint meeting of the two parties held at the state BJP headquarters in Guwahati.

The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia, AGP president and Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, Working President and Revenue Minister Keshab Mahanta, and AGP MP Phani Bhushan Choudhury, among others.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, BJP spokesperson Manoj Baruah confirmed, “Of the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats, AGP will field a candidate for one and BJP for the other.” He added that the BJP’s state election committee will finalize a three-member candidate panel in its June 3 meeting, which will be forwarded to the party’s central leadership for approval. The AGP will independently decide its nominee.

The meeting also reaffirmed the BJP-AGP alliance’s commitment to contest future elections together, with a special focus on the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly polls.
