
Guwahati, May 30: In a key development ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, the BJP and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have decided to contest one seat each out of the two vacant seats from Assam. The decision was finalized on Friday during a joint meeting of the two parties held at the state BJP headquarters in Guwahati.
The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia, AGP president and Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, Working President and Revenue Minister Keshab Mahanta, and AGP MP Phani Bhushan Choudhury, among others.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, BJP spokesperson Manoj Baruah confirmed, “Of the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats, AGP will field a candidate for one and BJP for the other.” He added that the BJP’s state election committee will finalize a three-member candidate panel in its June 3 meeting, which will be forwarded to the party’s central leadership for approval. The AGP will independently decide its nominee.
The meeting also reaffirmed the BJP-AGP alliance’s commitment to contest future elections together, with a special focus on the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly polls.

BJP’s statewide grassroots campaign underway
Meanwhile, the Assam BJP has launched a large-scale organizational campaign aimed at strengthening its presence at the grassroots level across the state. The drive, led by state party president Dilip Saikia, began on May 30 and will continue until June 15, with district executive meetings scheduled across all 39 organizational districts.
The campaign follows the BJP’s strong performance in the recent Gaon Panchayat and Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council elections and is designed to review booth-level performance and boost internal coordination.
According to BJP spokesperson Subhash Dutta, the party has already established a robust presence in over 26,000 of Assam’s 29,000 polling booths. The meetings will focus on booth, shakti kendra, and mandal-level coordination.

Assam BJP president Shri Dilip Saikia will participate in the executive meetings in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Darrang, North Kamrup, Udalguri, Dima Hasao, and Tamulpur districts while vice president Tapan Kumar Gogoi will be present in Majuli and Jorhat districts.
Assam BJP general secretary Pallab Lochan Das will attend meetings in Sonitpur and Biswanath districts, vice president Bijuli Kalita Medhi will be present in South Kamrup and Goalpara districts, vice president Nava Kumar Doley will participate in East Karbi Anglong district, vice president Ashok Bhattarai will cover Morigaon and Nagaon districts, vice president Jayanta Kumar Das will be present in Bongaigaon, South Salmara, and Mankachar, vice president Rekharani Das Boro will attend the meeting in Bajali district .

Former MP Rajdeep Roy will take part in the meeting in Hailakandi district, general secretary Pulak Gohain will attend in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts, secretary Ajay Roy will attend in Bilasipara, secretary Nandita Garlosa will be present in Cachar, secretary Tinamoni Daimari will attend in Dhubri, secretary Aparajita Bhuyan will be present in Barpeta, secretary Konard Purkayastha will participate in Shribhumi, state in-charge Harish Dwivedi will attend meetings in Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia, national secretary and MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa will attend in Golaghat, Kaliabor, and Hojai, state general secretary (Organization) G.R. Ravindra Raju will participate in meetings in Nalbari, Baksa, Kokrajhar, Chirang, and West Karbi Anglong districts.
The BJP says its 65 lakh karyakartas are actively engaged in the campaign, which is seen as a critical step in preparing the party machinery ahead of future electoral battles.
