BJP can win 20-30 seats in Meghalaya, says Hek

Shillong, Sep 4: Cabinet minister AL Hek, one of the two BJP MLAs in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly, has predicted the party could win 20-30 seats in the next state assembly election, which is less than three years away.

“We have the potential of winning almost 20-30 seats in the upcoming assembly elections,” Hek told reporters on Thursday.

Hek, however, said election outcome in Meghalaya’s context significantly depends on the candidates’ profiles and personalities, rather than strength of the party like BJP, which is heading the NDA government for the third consecutive time at the Centre.

Dismissing the party’s concern over lack of good candidates joining the BJP, he said, “How can you say that good candidates are not coming to the BJP? Like TH Rangad, he was a good candidate of the BJP.”

“We welcome all. Time will be a great healer, and time will tell us,” he said.

On the upcoming GHADC elections, Hek expressed confidence that the party’s consistent work for the people will earn their trust.

“BJP is one of the political parties that works 24×7,” Hek said, highlighting the party’s dedication to staying in touch with the people and working for their welfare.

Acknowledging that all political parties face challenges in garnering mass support, he emphasised continuous engagement with the public.

On the recent anti-Christian incidents, Hek clarified that some organisations might be involved, but social media often creates and blames the BJP.

“BJP has not done anything wrong against any community or any Christian, Hindu, Muslim or any faith…” he said.

On Tura MDC Bernard N Marak seeking help from leaders outside the state, Hek saw no issue with it.

“There’s nothing wrong in seeking help from anybody,” he said, adding that seeking assistance is a normal part of politics.
