BJP claims unprecedented win in panchayat polls, blames Congress collapse on ‘corruption and chaos’

Guwahati, April 18: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has hailed its performance in the ongoing Assam Panchayat elections as historic and record-breaking. Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Assam BJP general secretary and MLA Diplu Ranjan Sharma said the party, along with its NDA allies, has surpassed all previous benchmarks—both in terms of public support and uncontested victories.

“This is more than just an electoral win; it’s a reflection of the people’s faith in the BJP, the NDA, and the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,” Sharma said. “Our candidates have won unopposed in hundreds of constituencies, which clearly shows that the people trust our development-focused governance.”

According to Sharma, BJP candidates were declared elected without contest in 397 out of 435 constituencies across several districts. He attributed this massive lead to the BJP’s grassroots strategy, strong organizational coordination, and alliance-driven approach.

Sharma took direct aim at the Congress party, criticizing it for its failure to even field candidates in many areas. “The Congress, once the dominant force in Assam, is now directionless. They are unable to put up candidates—not because of procedural hurdles but because of a deep disconnect with the people and internal confusion within the party,” he said.

Former MP Pallab Lochan Das, who also addressed the media, echoed these sentiments. “Congress is collapsing under its own weight. Corruption, lack of leadership, and infighting have destroyed its credibility. They are scrambling to find candidates, while BJP candidates are winning uncontested,” Das said.

Das cited Nalbari district as a glaring example of Congress’s weakness, calling it a “complete embarrassment” that the party couldn’t even fill its candidate slots. “What’s more telling is that several Congress hopefuls, denied tickets or disillusioned with their party, are now joining the BJP. This speaks volumes about where public and political sentiment is headed.”

The BJP leaders credited much of the success to the governance model led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sharma said that under Sarma’s leadership, Assam has experienced “unprecedented progress and stability.”

He appreciated the “triple engine government”—a term referring to BJP’s hold at the Centre, in the state, and now increasingly in local Panchayat bodies. “This alignment has ensured that schemes are implemented effectively, corruption is curbed, and people actually see results on the ground,” Sharma stated.

With the bulk of uncontested seats already secured, BJP leaders are confident that the remaining phases of the Panchayat elections will only further consolidate their lead. They view this outcome not just as a political victory but as a public endorsement of their developmental agenda, clean governance, and party unity.

The BJP is now positioning itself as the dominant political force at all three levels of governance in Assam, with leaders claiming this will accelerate the state’s journey toward holistic growth, infrastructure development, and welfare-driven administration.
