BJP ramps up panchayat poll push with unopposed wins, slams Congress over ‘ticket for money’ scandal

Guwahati, April 22: With panchayat elections drawing near, the Assam BJP has launched a marathon campaign, claiming strong public backing and capitalizing on a series of unopposed victories to project dominance across the state.

In a statement on Tuesday, Assam BJP spokesperson Kalyan Gogoi said that the “overwhelming love and blessings” from the people have energized the party’s workers and infused new momentum into the campaign. He pointed to the massive turnouts at rallies led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP President Dilip Saikia as a clear signal of BJP’s widespread grassroots support.

According to Gogoi, the party has already secured 39 Zila Parishad and 299 Anchalik Panchayat seats without contest, a result of what he called “growing faith” in the BJP’s leadership and delivery. In many areas, opposition parties failed to field candidates, which Gogoi said reveals their organizational collapse in rural Assam.

Gogoi credited the BJP’s rising popularity to the developmental work under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, and the robust organizational efforts spearheaded by Saikia. “The grassroots machinery of the BJP is more charged than ever. This is not just a campaign—it’s a movement backed by real work and real results,” he said.

Gogoi didn’t hold back on the opposition, especially the Congress party, accusing it of being directionless and internally divided. He aimed at the opposition alliance, calling it a “power-hungry grouping” with no ideological foundation, marred by infighting and failure to mount any meaningful challenge on the ground.

He further alleged that Congress’s campaign is plagued by a “ticket-for-money” scandal, referencing accusations from within the party itself about corruption in ticket distribution.

“When your own leaders accuse you of selling tickets, it’s not an allegation—it’s an admission,” Gogoi said. “They talk of upholding the Constitution but show no respect for the electoral process.”

Gogoi mocked the Congress’s decision to form an internal inquiry committee into the scandal, describing it as “too little, too late” and evidence of deep-rooted dysfunction.

In a bold move, Gogoi issued an open challenge to the Congress: “Win the few seats you are contesting. Don’t hide behind baseless allegations. Let the people decide who they trust.”

He concluded by asserting that just as the BJP swept the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council elections, the party would repeat its performance in the panchayat polls, driven by public trust, clean politics, and grassroots strength.

As BJP pushes ahead with its high-voltage campaign, the message is clear: the party sees the panchayat elections not just as a local battle, but as a litmus test of political credibility and public mandate in rural Assam.
