Books on tribal traditions need promotion in central universities, says CM

Shillong, Dec 17: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has suggested that educational institutions, particularly Central Universities, should put up research papers and books focusing on the tribal customs and traditions so as to expand the understanding of tribal societies among the general masses.

Sangma said that he will move the Union Education Minister to ensure books on tribal society can be kept on book shelves of central universities, thereby giving an opportunity for people to read, understand and know about the way of the tribals from the state.

The chief minister said this on Tuesday while attending the launch programme on research projects undertaken by the Research and Development Committee by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in presence of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, and CEM of KHADC Pyniaid Sing Syiem.

The initiative funded by Chief Minister’s grant aims to promote research on the Khasi tradition and culture. An amount of Rs. 50 lakh has been granted to KHADC for undertaking the research project.

On the occasion, the chief minister launched several documented books on Khasi tradition and culture, authored by different researchers.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma remarked that the traditional knowledge and practices should be preserved for posterity, and the wisdom should be used to find out solutions to different global problems.

“Our rich tradition and practices should be promoted. Our ancient knowledge should be used to find solution to different emerging issues and concerns, particularly in the field of environment and conservation,” he added.

On the occasion, books on Governance in Environment through Traditional Practices, Traditional Medicine and Healing and Promoting Health Tourism, Matrilineal Culture, Marriage Practices in Khasi Culture and many more were released.
