Nongspung dorbar seeks aid for tourist amenities at scenic Mawsangri
Shillong, May 21: Mawsangri, a scenic location at Nongspung in East Khasi Hills district, has called for more attention to be turned into a favourite tourist destination, not only for its natural beauty but cultural significance.

“According to local legend, Mawsangri is believed to be the mother of Kyllang and Symper, two legendary figures in our cultural heritage,” said the village dorbar shnong, which submitted a memorandum seeking assistance for building tourist amenities at Mawsangri.
“We kindly request financial assistance to support the following initiatives: funding for infrastructure projects such as construction of a road to the top of the hill to facilitate easy access for tourists and locals alike, trails, signage and viewing areas, building a pond on the hill to create a serene and picturesque spot and creating a viewpoint with a panoramic view of Mawkyrwat areas and Mairang areas,” stated the memorandum submitted by a dorbar delegation to tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh on Wednesday.

Pointing out that the legend of Kyllang and Symper associated with Mawsangri has been passed down through generations, the acting sordar of Nongspung, Johnworthborn Kharmyndai, said, “We believe that preserving and promoting this cultural significance can attract tourists and benefit the local community.”
With proper development and preservation, Mawsangri can become a popular tourist destination, promoting cultural and economic benefits for the local community, he added.
