Tura, July 1: Various local bodies and civilians residing in the Garobadha town area are pressing upon authorities to clamp down on speeding trucks that commute through the Garo Hills region in the wake of Sunday night’s accident in which a boulder laden truck rammed into shops causing extensive damage and leaving a pedestrian and the accused driver injured.

A truck laden with boulders coming from Bhutan and heading towards Dalu border town in West Garo Hills lost control reportedly due to high speed crashing into two shops, a mobile store and a salon, causing extensive damage.

The truck also sustained extensive damage leaving the driver trapped inside the cabin for well over two hours until a powerful JCB earthmover was brought in to pull out the truck.

The driver Rofiq Ali and a pedestrian Abhian Paul (17 years) were taken to hospital for medical treatment and legal action has been initiated against the accused driver.

Complaints against reckless driving by truckers have been doing the rounds for several years now. These truck drivers accelerate through towns and highways with little concern for pedestrians and other commuters leading to accidents that could have been prevented.

Garo Hills police informed that stringent checks are being done to ensure all vehicles adhere to the rules of the road and stringent fines are imposed on violators.
