Centre issues show-cause notice to ULFA under UAPA, seeks response within 30 days

Guwahati, Feb 3: The Central government has issued a show-cause notice to the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA), seeking an explanation as to why the organization should not be declared an unlawful association for a period of five years, effective November 27, 2024.

The notice, issued via Gazette notification No. S.O. 5053(E) dated November 25, 2024, covers all ULFA factions including ULFA-I, wings, and front organizations.

The notice directs ULFA to submit a written response within 30 days of receiving the notice, explaining why it should not be classified as an unlawful organization under UAPA. The organization must file its objections or reply before the Registrar of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in this matter.

ULFA has also been asked to appear before the tribunal on March 4, 2025, at 3:00 PM, either through an authorized representative or legal counsel, at Court Room No. 2 of the Gauhati High Court (Old Block).
