City hospital to run liver health campaign ahead of WHD

Shillong, July 24: A four-day ‘World Hepatitis Awareness & Liver Health Initiative’ will be observed at Supercare Hospital on World Hepatitis Day 2026, intended to promote early detection and better liver care.

The initiative, to be held in Shillong from July 24 to 28 under the theme ‘Hepatitis: Let’s break it down’, will include a series of public outreach programmes focused on viral hepatitis, fatty liver, alcohol-related liver disease, and liver cancer.

Hospital officials said the goal is to make people aware of prevention, the need for timely screening, and access to specialist treatment.

The hospital will also provide a free health camp on July 28.

Visitors can avail specialist consultations, Hepatitis B and C screening, Hepatitis B vaccination, and basic health checks including blood pressure, blood sugar, and BMI assessment.

Diet and nutrition counselling along with a health education counter will also be set up during the drive.

Dr RS Thangkhiew, Chief Consultant Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist & Interventional Endoscopist at Supercare Hospital, stressed that most liver diseases show no early symptoms. “Hepatitis is often a silent disease, but it is preventable, detectable and treatable. I urge everyone to know their hepatitis status, protect their liver, and encourage at least one more person to do the same. Together, we can build a healthier future free from hepatitis,” he said.
