Shillong, Mar 6: A master plan for overall decongestion of Shillong city and improving traffic mobility is under preparation, chief minister Conrad Sangma told the state assembly on Thursday.
The Shillong Urban Mobility Policy will take into consideration road safety, road condition, parking space, and walking space among other aspects, he said while replying to a question raised by leader of opposition Mukul Sangma.
On the need to conduct safety audit of the roads, the chief minister said, “We will audit the whole thing and will leave no stone unturned.”
Announcing that 30 per cent of the roads will be for non-motorised transport, he said the government is creating walking spaces for people.
“All citizens will agree that the traffic (problem) is massive and steps are being taken to reduce traffic congestion,” Conrad said while informing that over 1,200 parking lots are either being constructed or sanctioned by the government.
He also assured that “all aspects have been looked into and as per rules.”
The CM further informed that the government has also come up with a street parking policy.
Earlier, in his reply to a question by VPP MLA Brightstar Marbaniang, deputy chief minister in-charge transport Sniawbhalang Dhar said the project of color painting in and around the Main Secretariat road, the interventions are as per the Indian Road Congress – Geometric Design Standards for Urban Roads and Streets.
He said the project has taken into account the traffic congestion and the ramification thereof in the area and the city as a whole.
According to him, a study has been conducted that it will help to ease traffic congestion in the city.
